Greece’s award-winning film director Angelopoulos died late on Tuesday, 24 January 2012, several hours after being involved in an accident while shooting his latest film (The other sea) in Athens. The filmmaker had been with his crew in the area of Drapetsona, near Piraeus when he was hit by a motorcycle driven by an off-duty police officer, on Tuesday evening. The accident occurred when Angelopoulos, 76, attempted to cross a busy road without wearing a special reflective uniform. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated in an intensive care unit but succumbed to his serious injuries several hours later. Before expiring, Angelopoulos suffered at least one heart attack.
The accident occurred while Angelopoulos was working on his upcoming movie "The Other Sea".
Throughout his career, Theodoros Angelopoulos has won numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at the 51st edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1998 for Eternity and a Day (Mia aioniotita kai mia mera). His films and their stories were writ large on the screens of the five continents and have attended the most important film festivals around the world, leading to him becoming a world-renowned filmmaker.
In a rare television interview last year, Angelopoulos said his next film was to be about Greece's major financial crisis. He publicly called on rival political parties to work together to try and ease the hardships facing many Greeks.
"I remain a leftist in total confusion," he told state-run NET television.
Several months later, the country's two main rival political parties agreed to form a coalition government to tackle Greece's enormous debt problems.
"This is an emergency situation. We must realize this. So we must all examine what can be done — the left and right. This is my plea," he said in the interview. "I am afraid of what tomorrow will bring."
